This song is about someone married to their art. In this case, the music. To everyone else, he's the hero. He always has the right advice, and he can move someone's heart to a place they can't get to on their own. That's where this line comes from: "Ushauri wangu nimegawa, yet I'm still up in my office, time to record and recording." I've given all my advice away, yet I'm still up in my office, recording and recording.
But like any bad husband, he blames his bride. He blames the music for the social life he doesn't have anymore, and for losing the skills to just be around people. Kind of like Spider-Man in Brand New Day, married to the job. It usually doesn't end well.
"Tamaa ni muziki uongee badala ya mimi, mawazo yangu ya zamani, moyo uongee badala ya mimi." I wish the music would speak instead of me. My old thoughts. Let the heart speak instead of me.
The song is really him talking to his first love: his inner child, the kid who loved watching movies. He promised that kid he'd come back, and he broke that promise and left him alone again. So nothing feels fun anymore. "Nilisema nitarudi, nilisema nitaandaa movie, now I'm thinking you might sleep alone."
Fun fact: Jumatatu started as a completely different song called Happiness, with a completely different sound. I took it, used AI to turn the beat into a sad indie rock instrumental, and a new song was born.
Love your art. Just don't break the promises you made to the kid who started it.
